7 questions with Kat Alvarado
SAMIRA B. RIZVI
Richmond resident Katrina Jaso Alvarado, 37, was recently named Mrs.
Fort Bend County 2009. Alvarado is a stay-at-home mother of two girls,
co-owner of a DJ business and she homeschools her oldest child. She is
also running for the Mrs. Texas 2009 title.
Q1. How did you get started with running for Mrs. Fort Bend County?
In November of 2008, I actually saw an ad placed in search of the next
Mrs. Fort Bend County. I responded and completed the process along with
28 other individuals competing for the same title. Fortunately, I was
chosen and am happily fulfilling my local obligations. In addition, I
will be representing Fort Bend County in the Mrs. Texas Pageant that
will be held in San Antonio on March 22, 2009.
Q2. What are the duties of a Mrs. Fort Bend County?
I serve as an ambassador of the county, including such cities as Sugar
Land, Needville, Richmond, Rosenberg, parts of Katy, etc. Namely, I
believe that I represent various women (stay-at-home moms, wives,
females across the board) who are such an important part of our
``working'' demographic. I am getting more involved with various
organizations that encourage women, families and children with
improving their lives and reaching their goals. I include, but do not
limit those duties to the betterment of promoting family values,
children's issues, women's issues, marriage and other like resources,
events and/or organizations that support them.
Q3. Have you been in a pageant before? If so, how long have you been
participating in pageants?
I have been in two prior pageants. Both while I was in high school,
about 19 years ago. I have not done any pageants since then. However, I
have always wanted to pursue a bigger venue of pageants and now, I am
actually living out a dream.
Q4. What was your first reaction when you found out you had won?
I was shocked and asked my husband to confirm the letter that had
officially named me. I wanted to make absolutely sure that I read the
text correctly. I was extremely excited about the news.
Q5. What are some goals you have set for yourself?
Some immediate goals are: Winning the Mrs. Texas tile and representing
our great county and state to the fullest; and getting back on a steady
routine with my girls (after Hurricane Ike's devastation, the
reconstruction of parts of our home has put a slow but progressive,
movement to get back to our normal schedule.)
Some continuing and long term goals: Being a positive role model for my
daughters, keeping my marriage fresh, get more fit, and travel.
Q6. If you could be anything in your life, what would you be and why?
Someone who is in a positive position to always do more, for women's
issues, children's issues and family issues. When and where I could
realistically inspire good works done in advancing these areas.
Q7. List three words to describe yourself.
Sincere, passionate, happy
